Behavior

From requirements to functions, flows and simulation.

Derive the system functions from a requirements document, arrange them into a functional flow, and draw the FFBD and action diagrams from the same model. Simulate the flow to see its time and cost.

What you can do

Extract functions

Rule-Based Extraction makes one function per functional requirement. In the editable preview, rename, merge, split, reassign requirements and set parents. Apply creates the functions and their satisfied by links as one undo step.

Build the flow

Wrap functions in AND, OR and LOOP, add branches and drag to reorder, or edit the flow as text in a compact notation. The coverage tab lists requirements without a function and functions without a requirement.

FFBDs

The FFBD is drawn from the function flow: numbered function blocks, AND and OR gates, loops with an entry circle and return arrow. Choose left-to-right or top-down orientation.

Action diagrams

Model the LML functional flow of an action with SYNC, OR, LOOP and EXIT, the I/O passed between actions, resources and performing assets. Decompose any action into its own sub-flow.

Simulation

Run a flow as a discrete-event simulation you can watch, or as a Monte Carlo study of up to 20,000 runs. Panels show a Gantt chart, total time and cost, resource use and statistics.

Check against a requirement

Pick an output such as total time, set the criterion and the required probability, and read P(meet) with its confidence interval. Record Result writes the value and a passed or failed test case.

Functions with AI

  • Extract Functions with AI proposes verb-noun functions and allocates each requirement to one of them.
  • Suggest Flow with AI proposes an order, branches and loops for the functions.
  • Both open the same editable preview as the rule-based tools; nothing is applied until you click Apply.
  • Running the extraction again updates existing functions instead of adding copies. See AI assistance.

How it works

  1. Open Functional Analysis. Choose Behavior → Functional Analysis and pick the requirements document in the scope list.
  2. Extract functions. Click Rule-Based Extraction… or use ✦ AI ▾ → Extract Functions with AI…, review the preview, then Apply.
  3. Arrange the flow. On the Flow & FFBD tab, wrap blocks in AND, OR or LOOP, or edit the flow as text.
  4. Draw the FFBD. Click Open FFBD; set the orientation and start and end labels there.
  5. Produce the tables. Copy or download the requirements and functions tables, or click Assignment Report (DOCX) for one Word file with the tables and the FFBD.
  6. Simulate. From the action diagram choose ▶ Simulate ▾ to run a discrete-event or Monte Carlo simulation.

Turn your requirements into a functional flow.
