Usable from the keyboard and with a screen reader

Everyone on a project can do the same work, whether they use a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader or magnification.

Keyboard

  • Every page, menu and dialog works from the keyboard. Shift+F10 or the Menu key opens an item's actions.
  • Every diagram type can be built and edited from the keyboard: insert shapes, move between them, connect them with Connect…, and move or resize them with arrow keys.
  • Documents, the database, matrices, Kanban boards and presentations work from the keyboard; Gantt charts have a table view.
  • Whiteboard single-key shortcuts can be turned off.

Screen readers

  • Controls, tables, menus and dialogs have names and roles that screen readers read out.
  • Page changes, errors, dialogs and notices are announced.
  • Contents lists a diagram as text: its shapes, connections and the model relationships between them. Charts have a text summary of their values.
  • Checked with VoiceOver in Safari on macOS.

Seeing the screen

  • Text meets WCAG contrast (4.5:1) in the light and the dark theme.
  • A clear focus ring shows where the keyboard is.
  • Status, gaps and risk levels use text or symbols, not colour alone.
  • Pages work with browser zoom.

Videos and Help

  • Every video has captions, and every tutorial also works without its video.
  • Help and the Docs describe each task step by step, including the keyboard keys (Keyboard shortcuts).

Standards and known limits

Holarch is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. It does not meet every criterion yet. Known limits today:

  • A few actions are easiest with a mouse, such as dragging Gantt bars or resizing database columns; each has a keyboard alternative or a field to type the value.
  • Windows screen readers (NVDA and JAWS) have not been tested yet.
  • On very narrow screens, some side panels are hidden rather than reflowed.

An Accessibility Conformance Report (VPAT, WCAG 2.1 edition) lists each criterion with details.
