LML Classes (schema)

The 26 classes in this default schema, with their attributes. Children inherit their parent's attributes and relationships.

ClassParentDescriptionAttributes
Action—Something the system, its users or the project does: a function, activity, process or step that turns inputs into outputs. Assets perform Actions, and Action diagrams show their order.Percent Complete (PERCENT), Start (DATETIME), Duration (DURATION)
Artifact—A document, file, model or other body of information that the project refers to or produces, such as a specification, plan, report, standard or test suite.Date Published (DATETIME), File (FILE)
Asset—Something that does work in or around the system: a system, subsystem, component, person, organization or facility. Assets perform Actions and are linked by Connections.
Characteristic—A property of another entity, such as a size, weight, power, color, role or parameter, with an optional value and units.Value (TEXT), Units (TEXT)
ConduitConnectionA physical or data link between Assets that carries Input/Output items, such as a cable, data bus, network, pipe, road or radio link. It has a capacity and a latency.Capacity (NUMBER), Latency (DURATION), Units (TEXT)
Connection (abstract)—The abstract parent of the ways Assets are linked: Conduits for physical and data links, Logical connections for conceptual ones, and Dependencies between Tasks.
Cost—Money or effort that is planned, estimated or spent for another entity, such as a planned cost, an actual cost or labor hours.Amount (NUMBER), Units (TEXT), Rate (ENUMERATION), Category (ENUMERATION), Contract Type (ENUMERATION)
Decision—A choice to be made or already made, with its options, assumptions and justification, such as a trade-study outcome, a design choice or a schedule change.Justification (BIG_TEXT), Assumptions (BIG_TEXT)
DependencyConnectionA link between two Tasks that sets their order in the schedule, such as finish-to-start or start-to-start.
Equation—A mathematical relation between Characteristics, used to calculate values and to show how parameters depend on each other (parametric diagrams).Value (TEXT)
Input/Output—Matter, energy, data or a signal that an Action receives or generates and that Conduits carry between Assets. Marked as a trigger, it is what lets the receiving Action start.Size (NUMBER), Units (TEXT), Type (TEXT), Value (TEXT)
Issue—A problem, question or concern that needs attention and an outcome, with a status, an assignee and a priority.Status (ENUMERATION), Assignee (USER_TEAM), Priority (ENUMERATION)
Location (abstract)—The abstract parent of the places where entities exist: physical sites, orbits and network addresses.
LogicalConnectionA conceptual link between Assets, such as "is part of" or "uses", mainly used in data models and entity-relationship diagrams. It carries no items.Relationship Attributes (TEXT)
MeasureCharacteristicA Characteristic that is tracked against goals: a metric such as a measure of effectiveness, a measure of performance, a key performance parameter or a technical performance measure, with threshold, objective and projected values.Projected Value (TEXT), Threshold Value (TEXT), Objective Value (TEXT), Improvement Direction (ENUMERATION), Tolerance (TEXT)
OrbitalLocationA position along an orbit around a celestial body, given by its orbital elements; transfer orbits are included.Apoapsis (NUMBER), Periapsis (NUMBER), Eccentricity (NUMBER), Semimajor Axis (NUMBER), Inclination (NUMBER), Reference Plane (TEXT), Longitude of Ascending Node (NUMBER), Origin of Longitude (TEXT), Argument of Periapsis (NUMBER), Mean Anomaly (NUMBER)
PhysicalLocationA place on, above or below the surface of a body such as the Earth, given by an address, coordinates or altitude.Address (TEXT), Coordinates (GEOPOINT), Altitude (NUMBER)
RequirementStatementA Statement of what the system must do or how well it must do it: a capability, characteristic or quality the system needs so that it is useful to its stakeholders.Rationale (BIG_TEXT), Status (ENUMERATION), Quality Score (QUALITY_SCORE), Appropriate (QUALITY), Complete (QUALITY), Conforming (QUALITY), Correct (QUALITY), Feasible (QUALITY), Necessary (QUALITY), Verifiable (QUALITY), Singular (QUALITY), Unambiguous (QUALITY)
ResourceAssetAn Asset that exists in a quantity that Actions use up, hold for a while or create, such as fuel, power, money, crew or storage space.Units (TEXT), Initial Amount (NUMBER), Minimum Amount (NUMBER), Maximum Amount (NUMBER)
Risk—A possible future event that would affect cost, schedule or performance, rated by how likely it is and how severe its effect would be.Consequence Description (BIG_TEXT), Consequence (PERCENT), Probability (PERCENT), Status (ENUMERATION)
Statement—A piece of text the project keeps track of, such as a need, goal, objective, assumption, constraint or definition, usually taken from an Artifact.
TaskActionAn Action that is project work rather than system behavior: a to-do item with a due date, an assignee and a status, shown on Gantt charts and Kanban boards.Finish (DATETIME), Due Date (DATETIME), Estimated Date of Completion (DATETIME), Status (ENUMERATION), Assignee (USER_TEAM)
Test CaseActionAn Action that verifies or validates something, such as a test, inspection, analysis or demonstration, with its setup and its expected and actual results.Set Up (BIG_TEXT), Expected Result (BIG_TEXT), Actual Result (BIG_TEXT), Status (ENUMERATION)
Time—A point or span in time, such as a milestone, phase or deadline, at which entities occur or decisions fall due.Start (DATETIME), Duration (DURATION)
TransitionActionA change from one state to another in a state machine, with an optional trigger and guard condition.Guard (TEXT), Trigger Type (ENUMERATION)
VirtualLocationA place in a digital network, such as a web address, file share or server path.Address (URI)
